Subject: cubase and patch caching
In reply to Steve Schow's question about the gus and cubase
Cubase will patch cache to a gus. I have seen this done at a multi
media show.
The stall was run by the uk firm Zytech.
You should be careful about which version of cubase you buy though as I
believe it is only a very recent version which supports patch cacheing.
The people you are buying it from should be able to tell you what features
this software does or doesnt have...or IMHO they arent worth dealing with.
Cubase is excellent, but its too expensive.

Subject: Gus quality
Could someone please tell me if the GUS is really good quality compared
to proper synths etc? I read that it is not as good as the roland
cards. Is this true? is it noticably worse? Is it just poor samples
which are the problem?
What I really mean is that if I mix sounds from a Yamaha SY-22
which I am thinking of buying, and the GUS, will there be a noticeable
difference?
Also, I have read about samples you can but on CDROM. can you
easily get these into the required GUS format?
Are there other cards around that req. patch caching? If not, do
any of the major sequencers support it?
thanks,
Iain Huxley

Subject: MIDI-Through again
Hi !
I posted a question concerning PatchMan (I don't get any sound out of
that '*@@*##' PatchMan when I'm entering notes on my piano (connected
via connector box (Midi Through is activated). Everything runs fine
with other win-apps.
My problem now is: I didn't get any mail the last two days (our
mailserver ate it), no digests and no personal mails. So would you
please (whoever has/had suggestions concerning that problem - I hope
there are some guys knowing what's going on) repost your replies (if
possible to my address in order not to overload the list-server :-} ).
Thank you *very* much in advance,
SAM

aside from those in the GUS file areas, (which were there, anyway), is
there another ftp site which has lots of music files (specifically midi,
but mod and 669 also)?
thanks,

Subject: MidiQuest librarian and GUS MIDI - how?
How do I get Midi-Quest librarian (Win's) to work via GUS MIDI?
GUS port address is 220 <-> 270.
MidiQuest librarian looks for an MPU at 300H <-> 370H
(and finds none).
What can be done?

I too would welcome this information. In fact, I'd welcome a comparison of the
various sequencers, with (approximate) pros and cons of each. I'd also welcome
pointers to any demo versions - I have a demo of Cakewalk, but I'd like to try
Cubase and (what?) others.
Thanks.

Subject: MOD players
Does anybody use a Windows mod player that works well with the GUS? I am using
WinMOD right now, but it doesn't sound very good. I'm not sure why. But it's
very noisy compared to GUSMOD from DOS. And neither GTSR nor GUSMOD will work
inside a DOS window. In either case when I started to play a file, the hard
drive light came on and the machine froze up - even CTRL-ALT-DEL wouldn't
reset it. And I can't get Ultramod to work in either DOS or Windows! It
just returns me immediately to the command line without playing anything.
(Yes, I was putting the mod file on the command line.)
If there isn't a Windows mod player for the GUS then somebody needs to
write one. It should also play ULT and 669 and FAR files, and include
such features as a play list, VU meters for each channel like GUSMOD has.
Even the minimized icon should have VU meters on it - maybe just left and
right. I'm thinking of writing one myself; but of anyone here plans to
write one, can you let me know so we don't duplicate efforts? As this
would be my first Windows programming project, it'd probably take me a
long time.
Can somebody give me an overview of what Windows calls to use to work
with the GUS on the lowest level that's "proper"? I mean, it's not
politically correct to send stuff directly to the GUS's port address, the
way GUSMOD probably does, right? or is it? Generally Windows has a high-
level way of doing things, like the digital audio driver for instance.
But if Winmod is any indication, that digital audio driver doesn't sound
the best.
